These days its very easy to put up a blog, and write something behind the wall of the first amendment. With domain privacy, private company privacy, attorney’s, and the like; websites can make false claims or speculate to the extent of hurting other businesses. The consumer is always thinking they are getting the raw deal when they read reviews specially when it deals with timeshares and their transfers.
I believe how a company starts, operates, and continues is really important. However, being a private company, means that some things can remain private without explanation. Not for deceptive intent, but rather to continue to do business and provide stability for the existing clients while a company grows with new clients in a different way. Every business works this way. Its why you call your cable company and ask for the deal your friend just got, because its better than what you signed up for a year ago. Is it the cable company’s job to call you up and offer you lower prices for the same thing? It would be nice, wouldn't it? Deception or good business?
There will always be stone throwers. Take for example Facebook.com which started in 2003. Back then not many people heard of it. In fact, the social media giant really didn't gain traction until 2008. Yet in the background, without much to do, people were still working on building the multibillion dollar company.
If we looked at the legal records of Facebook, we might not understand how the company started. Facebook really didn’t have a patient on their product until 2010 and couldn’t really go public until 2012 but yet they started at Harvard in October 2003, formed the company in 2004 (source ). So everything that happened within the company, outside of the generic corporate filings were private until the IPO.
I suspect that during that time there were many individuals outside of Mark Z who were involved with the company that were really hard to identify. Most likely, you can’t name the top ten richest people from the development team of Facebook prior to 2008. Today, because the company is public, everything is exposed.
Is this deceptive or a company and individual rights? Facebook is a company that most likely holds everything about you. Where you have been, how many relationships you have been in, where and when you took and uploaded photos, your birthday, your mom’s, and family, friends, where you work; the list can go on and on. Deceptive? Do you think they are storing all that information right? How are you paying Facebook?
All of that to say that, there are things that we do not know about our local lawn mowing service and how they formed their business or operate it. Yet each week, the lawn is mowed and he has multiple references of being able to do and say what he promised. Contractually he agreed to that and followed through. Are some lawn guys more expense than others? Of course, in my opinion you get what you pay for.
In the end, make an educated choice, not one based on fear.
